JBL Subwoofers

The great founder and chairperson of JBL, James Bullough Lansing was born on 14 January 1902 in Macoupin County, Millwood Township, Illinois. For some period Lansing worked as an automotive mechanic and was very professional in engine repairing. Afterwards he attended an automotive school for mechanics with the support of the dealer for whom he was working. He also worked for the Baldwin loudspeaker company in Salt Lake City and that was the time when he also met his future business partner Ken Decker.

After their commitment of working together they moved to Los Angles and started to produce loudspeakers that were basically used for radio. On March 1927 they registered their company as California Corporation. An important system that Lansing manufactured was Iconic a small two-way system using a fifteen-inch low frequency loudspeaker and a small high frequency driver, the 801, driving a small multi-cellular horn. During the first three years James B. Lansing Sound, Incorporated made no profit at all; it hardly stayed afloat. The JBL Company occupied four locations, and that had an impact on production efficiencies over the short span of three years. During the late forties and early fifties, the name Lansing was remarkably high as trade identification. The James B. Lansing Sound Company market their loudspeakers with the recognition "Jim Lansing Signature Sound" inscribed courageously on the pot structures, up to 1955.
